DESCRIPTION:As one of the keynote speakers at the 1st International Congress on the Pedagogy of Death and Educational Development\, I am honored to present my address titled “Empowering Teachers to Navigate Death Education in the Classroom – Addressing Challenges and Exploring Opportunities.” In my speech\, I will delve into the pivotal role educators play in guiding students through the complex topics of grief\, loss\, and death. I will discuss the challenges teachers often encounter\, such as emotional preparedness\, resource limitations\, and the sensitivity required when addressing these subjects. Emphasizing the necessity for comprehensive training and support\, I will explore innovative strategies for integrating death education into curricula. My goal is to empower fellow educators to approach these difficult topics with confidence and compassion\, fostering environments where students feel safe to express their emotions and engage in meaningful discussions about death.

SUMMARY:Photovoice as a Research and Educational Tool in Grief Education
DESCRIPTION:Photovoice\, a participatory action research method developed by Caroline C. Wang and Mary Ann Burris in the 1990s (1994\, 1997)\, empowers individuals and communities by allowing them to tell their stories\, express perspectives\, and advocate for change through photography. This art-based technique has proven effective in enhancing well-being\, increasing self-knowledge\, and fostering consciousness in Death Education workshops (see Raccichini et al.\, 2022). \nIn our presentation we explore the use of photovoice both as a research and educational tool\, focusing on discussions about loss and grief with Year 5 and 6 students as well as with teachers during their in-service training on Grief Education. Participants used photovoice to share personal stories\, articulating ideas\, questions\, thoughts\, and emotions in response to the question “What does loss and grief mean to you?” \nEngaging in group discussions\, participants shared insights\, feelings\, and stories associated with their photographs. Subsequently\, they developed narratives or captions to provide context and depth to each image. Photovoice played a crucial role in achieving Grief Education goals\, raising awareness of common features and unique aspects of grief for each individual. The compiled photographs and narratives also served as a research tool\, offering insights into how students and teachers learn about and cope with grief-related topics. \nOur results underscore the importance of introducing sensitive topics in the classroom such as those of loss and grief in a meaningful way\, with implications for stakeholders and policymakers in education policy\, teacher education and curriculum development interested in Grief Education. \nReferences \nRaccichini\, M.\, Biancalani\, G.\, Franchini\, L.\, Varani\, S.\, Ronconi\, L.\, and Testoni\, I. SUMMARY:Death Education - Good Practice
DESCRIPTION:The value of Death Education in schools is to enable pupils to recognize and cope with loss and grief\, to become more aware of their mortality\, and to fully embrace their lives. Death Education provides pupils with opportunities to explore the subject of death and loss both intellectually and affectively\, to examine how culture and diversity affect understanding of death and loss\, and to delve into the moral\, religious\, spiritual\, and ethical issues involved in death and loss. \nThe seminar aims to provide teachers with educational tools through which they can discuss issues of loss and grief with pupils in a school setting. The purpose of this seminar is twofold: to give opportunities of experiential approach to proposed lesson plans and to theoretically frame the area of Death Education. The proposed educational tools will be based mainly on children’s books and films as well as on independent activities which can be spread throughout the school year.

SUMMARY:Death Education in elementary school: Teachers’ perceptions and affective experiences of an in-service training program in Cyprus
DESCRIPTION:Due to the Covid-19 pandemic\, the need for Death Education is more pronounced than ever. The purpose of this paper is to analyze elementary school teachers’ perceptions and affective experiences of an in-service training on death education taught by the first author over three years at the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute. The teacher training focused on how to teach about issues of death\, loss\, and grief at the elementary school. The article examines what drives teachers to participate in the training and describes their concerns and dilemmas of engaging with issues of death\, loss\, and grief in their teaching. The study\, which is based on an action research methodology\, also explores teachers’ reflections on their pedagogical efforts to design and implement a lesson plan in which issues of death\, loss\, and grief are included.
